Statement on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

The National accessArts Centre will again respect the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and our programs and facilities will be closed on September 30. This day is a time for reflection, learning, and a renewed commitment to the ongoing journey of reconciliation in Canada.

As an arts organization, we believe in the power of creative expression to foster healing, understanding, and meaningful dialogue. Through our Indigenous programs and our Ways of Knowing artist ensemble, we are thoughtfully discussing the concept of reconciliation with the disability community, utilizing the power of the arts. The NaAC remains committed to these programs, and sharing the works that are developed as a result.

In 2023, NaAC had the honor of hosting a natural dye workshop at the Leighton Art Centre in recognition of Truth and Reconciliation Day. This workshop encouraged participants to connect with the land and its rich resources, using botanicals to explore the beauty of working with nature. Indigenous communities have long used plants, minerals, and other natural materials to create vibrant dyes for textiles and art. This practice reflects a deep connection to the land and the natural environment, with a respect for sustainable harvesting and an understanding of local ecosystems.

This year, from October 30 – December 4, NaAC will be offering Ink Making with the Land. Participants will learn how to create natural ink with plants that grow in Treaty 7.

We encourage everyone to take time on Monday, September 30, 2024 to listen to Indigenous stories and deepen their understanding of the lasting impacts of colonialism.
