What are Community Dance Classes at the NaAC?
Prioritizing access and inclusivity, Community Dance Classes at the NaAC are created for dancers 18 years of age and older, from all skills, genders and backgrounds. Our classes focus on enjoying and experiencing elements from styles like Hip Hop and Broadway Jazz: Musical Theatre, as well as improvisation and personal expression. No experience is required, and all movement abilities and variations are welcome to attend!
What to expect at a NaAC Community Dance Class?
Dance Classes at the NaAC are a great way to express yourself, find joy, laugh, try something new and be with community. During each class, we focus on building skills in the style in a way that caters to each individual and their access needs.
Here is what you can expect in one of our dance classes:
-Welcoming opening circle
-Warm Up
-Accessible style specific concepts and movements
-Around and across the floor movement
-Improvisation or movement sequences
-Closing circle
Dancers are encouraged to participate in a way that feels most comfortable and that might look different each week!
Accessibility:
Our classes are taught at The DJD Dance Centre in Calgary, where all spaces, including the washrooms are physically accessible. The DJD Dance Centre is close to transit and available for Access Calgary. Seated and standing dancers are welcome to attend, as well as anyone who uses a mobility device. If you have any questions or concerns about access, please do not hesitate to let us know.
Parking at The DJD Dance Centre:
Two large paid-public parking lots are located at the South and East sides of the building. Two-hour meter street parking is available on Center Street SE, between 12 and 13 Avenue SE. Two disabled parking spaces are available on the south side of the building.
How to Join:
Community Dance Classes at the NaAC are by registration only. Please visit our website to view current class registrations.
Stay tuned to our newsletters, social media and website for registration information.
ASL Interpretation:
ASL interpretation is available upon request and we happily welcome Deaf/hard of hearing persons. Please let us know on your registration if this is something that you require.
Introductions and Pronouns:
At the beginning of each class, we open with a welcoming circle. This gives dancers an opportunity to introduce themselves, their pronouns and something they would like to share about themselves. As an organization that activity practices inclusivity, we respect and honour each person’s wishes to be referred to by only their name, or common pronouns such as She/Her, He/Him, They, Them.
Footwear and Mobility Devices:
Dancers are welcome to wear clean, non-marking running shoes, socks or bare feet for dance classes. We would like to extend a reminder that there may be mobility devices and wheels moving in the space as well.
