Hip Hop – Spring Session
Originating in the Bronx, NYC during the 1970’s, Hip Hop is one of the most popular styles of dance and music today. Along with specific moves and grooves, hip hop boosts personal expression, style and confidence. In this session, dancers will learn moves, explore freestyle, choreography and music from the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s!
At the end of the session, there will be a final presentation on June 6th from 1:30-2PM at The DJD Dance Centre.
Dancers can attend this class in person or online.
ASL interpretation available upon request.
This class is for people 18 years old and older.

About Ashley Brodeur
Performing Arts Manager, Ashley Brodeur, became enthralled with the National access Arts Centre in the dance studio. After leading a movement session, her time with the artists at the NaAC ignited a passion that has inspired a career shift holding great potential of impact to the performing arts ecosystem.
Creator and Director of Maven Movement, providing professional level performance and training opportunities on an equitable scale has been her focus for the past 7 years. With professional performance credits that include Culture Shock Washington, D.C., the Dubai Shopping Festival, The Fringe Festival, TIFF, BravoFact!, collaborations with brands such as Loreal, Labatt and XBox, Toronto’s Choreographer’s Ball and the Much Music Video Awards with PSY, she believes it is essential to ensuring high caliber performance opportunities are available to all, especially those underrepresented in traditional professional atmospheres.
An attendee of the BFA Dance Program at York University, the Commercial Dance Program at George Brown College and the Professional Training Program at Decidedly Jazz Danceworks, she has actively trained in Los Angeles, Toronto and Saint Petersburg, Russia. Previously, she has taught coast to coast in Canada, the Dominican Republic and has shared her skills with hundreds of students throughout various school residency programs. A long-time faculty member at the School of Decidedly Jazz and iLLFX Education, she has also guest taught at numerous dance studios throughout Ontario and Alberta resulting in an extensive wealth of knowledge and adaptability to dance and the performing arts.
About Chawna Exner
With a background largely in the styles of contemporary, jazz, and hip hop, Chawna has had a life-long passionate relationship with dance! After pursuing professional training in the University of Calgary Dance Program, Chawna crossed paths with the art of Burlesque and has since established herself as a prominent Burlesque artist under the stage name Eva Angel. Burlesque has brought her to grace many stages in Calgary and across Canada, including the Calgary, Vancouver, and Edmonton International Burlesque Festivals, Wild Mountain Music Fest, and Calgary’s High Performance Rodeo. In 2018, Chawna began work with an accessible dance company, Momo Movement (now National accessArts Centre), and has sought to discover ways to bring equity and accessibility into dance and Burlesque ever since.
About Assistant James Silcock
James began dancing with MoMo in 2009. He has since began teaching and joined the performance ensemble performing in Imaginary People, the Mind Palace and the ensemble’s dance film, Moving Pictures/Pictures Moving. Not only does James bring a great deal of rhythm and funk to the ensemble and his classes, he is also exploring his choreographic and spoken word talents, bringing his characters to a new level. James can’t wait to be onstage once again in the near future!
