The Value of Differences: Human Diversity Rather Than Disorders in the Contemporary Artworld

Join us at the National accessArts Centre on Thursday, September 11th, for a special presentation by Italian Curator, Matilde Nuzzo!
While in Canada, Matilde is conducting artist studio and gallery visits. In Calgary she will discuss her curatorial practice including ongoing projects to elevate inclusivity and community-development practices with neuro-diverse artists. She will also share her experiences as the Venice gallery manager for Ydessa Hendeles: Grand Hotel, an exhibition awarded “Best Off-Site Exhibition” of 2024 by the Globe&Mail. Kate Taylor briefly described the exhibition as “…a highly unusual reflection on migration and post-Holocaust trauma…Grand Hotel was a collection of historic paintings and found objects, including Louis Vuitton suitcases and a Volkswagen Beetle, evoking the shtetl, the Czars who ruled over it and the trappings of luxury travel.”

Matilde Nuzzo is a sinologist by training and visual arts curator by profession, graduating from Venice’s Universita Ca’Foscari. Over the last five years she founded LensArt, an initiative to highlight neuro-diverse artists and inclusivity, and has curated and managed numerous exhibitions, workshops and cultural events to deliver significant viewer experiences. Project partners include Pistoletto Foundation, University of Verona, Fondazione Marchesani (Venice), ArtVerona 2023, l’Atelier Espressivo Ticino and Spazio Thetis (Venice), among others. Matilde is project manager for the Italy Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka and was a project coordinator and gallery manager for Art Museum at the University of Toronto’s presentation of Ydessa Hendeles: Grand Hotel, an official collateral event at the 60th Venice Biennale (2024). Matilde also produces the monthly people column on ArtsLife.com featuring interviews with artists (including Canadians such as Leesa Streifler, Mats Nordstrom and Zachari Logan).
